aiReceptionist vs AMBS

AMBS is a family-owned, US-staffed medical answering service with signed business associate agreements and annual third-party HIPAA audits; aiReceptionist is an AI receptionist for businesses whose calls do not carry protected health information.

Ambs Call Center has been answering calls for physicians since 1932, and its site is built around one promise: HIPAA-compliant handling of patient calls, audited every year. We do not make that promise today. This page is for the practice or business deciding which of those two facts matters more for their calls, and it says plainly where AMBS is the right answer.

When AMBS is the better choice

AMBS is the better choice whenever a call might carry protected health information. A medical, dental, behavioural-health or home-health practice needs a business associate agreement, encrypted message delivery to the on-call clinician, and an answering service that can show an auditor it was checked this year. AMBS publishes all three; we publish none of them, and a practice should not take that risk on our behalf. The same applies to any business whose regulator or insurer expects a named human to take the call.

It is also the right pick when your calls are triage rather than reception: routing an urgent patient call to whichever provider is on call tonight, according to a schedule your office updates, is exactly what AMBS has done since 1932. An AI receptionist can capture and forward; it should not be the thing deciding who gets paged at 3 a.m. If most of your calls are of this kind, start with AMBS. If they are not, quotes, bookings, hours, directions, that is where the price difference is real, and where we belong.

What switching actually involves

  1. Confirm your AMBS contract term and notice period in writing; they are not published on their site.
  2. If any of your calls involve protected health information, keep a HIPAA-compliant desk for those calls, AMBS, or a partner desk such as notifyMD, and route only non-clinical calls to the AI.
  3. Give the receptionist the same brief your desk has: what you do, your hours, what to capture, and which calls must reach a person.
  4. Decide where escalations go, your mobile, a colleague, or a human desk you keep as the backup for the calls software should not take.
  5. Run both side by side for the trial and compare the call summaries and transcripts with the messages you get today.
  6. Move the forwarding once you are satisfied. Your number does not change.

Questions people ask

Is aiReceptionist HIPAA compliant?
We do not publish a HIPAA compliance statement or sign business associate agreements today. AMBS states signed BAAs, encrypted secure messaging and annual third-party HIPAA audits. A practice handling patient information should choose accordingly.
How does AMBS pricing compare?
AMBS Real People plans start at $149/month for 100 minutes with an $85 setup fee, and additional minutes cost $1.29 on that plan. Our DIY plan is $99/month for 200 minutes with additional minutes at $0.60, and we list no setup fee.
AMBS sells an AI receptionist too. How is that different?
AMBS lists an AI Receptionist from $19/month at $0.79 a minute, and a Hybrid plan from $194/month where the AI hands off to a live US-based agent on complex intents or low confidence. We sell the AI receptionist as the product, with transfer to a person you name as the backup.
Does either offer a free trial?
AMBS says it does not offer a free trial. Our free trial includes everything in the plan you choose.
Can I use aiReceptionist for a medical practice at all?
For calls that carry no protected health information, general enquiries, directions, hours, yes. For anything clinical, use a HIPAA-compliant desk. Our partner listing includes notifyMD for HIPAA-compliant after-hours medical answering.
