Webhook

A webhook is an HTTP request that one system sends to a URL you provide when an event happens, carrying the event data as its payload.

Also called: HTTP callback, web callback

Instead of a system polling repeatedly to ask "has anything changed?", a webhook lets the source push the news: when a call ends, a booking is made or a message arrives, the source system sends a request to your endpoint with the details. Your endpoint can then do whatever it likes with them, store the record, trigger an automation, send a notification.

Webhooks are the simplest way to connect two systems that were not designed for each other, because the receiver only needs to accept a standard HTTP request. They are one-directional: the source talks, the receiver listens. To ask a system a question, you need its API instead.

In a receptionist context, webhooks carry post-call events outward, and a workflow step that calls a URL and waits for the reply can also be used to fetch information mid-call.
