Voice over the internet
Voice over the internet is a spoken conversation carried over a data connection rather than the telephone network, typically from a button on a web page using WebRTC.
Also called: in-browser voice, web voice, WebRTC calling
A visitor clicks "talk to us" and speaks to the receptionist through their browser’s microphone. No phone number is dialed and no call charges apply; the audio streams over the web.
For the business this turns a website into a channel that can answer questions and take bookings by voice. For the receptionist it is the same conversation as a phone call, with two differences: there is usually no caller ID, and the session can be paired with what the visitor is looking at on the page.
Because anyone with the page can start a session, browser voice needs abuse controls that phone lines get for free from the cost of a call.
