After-hours answering

After-hours answering is the handling of a business’s calls outside its normal opening hours: evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. It is done by a person or system other than the in-house team.

Also called: out-of-hours answering, overnight answering, 24/7 answering

Most small and mid-sized businesses have a front desk for a working day and nothing for the other two-thirds of the week. After-hours answering fills that gap: calls forward automatically at a set time, or when unanswered, to a service that answers in the business’s name.

What happens next depends on the arrangement. The simplest version takes a message for the morning. Fuller versions answer questions, book appointments, and follow an escalation procedure for urgent calls, waking an on-call plumber, paging a clinician, or transferring to a named person.

The category is served by answering services, virtual receptionist providers and AI receptionists alike. The distinguishing question for a buyer is usually how urgent calls are identified and reached to a human, since that is where after-hours cover earns its keep.
