Voicemail

Voicemail is a system that records a spoken message from a caller when the called party does not answer, storing it for later playback or delivery by email or text.

Also called: voice mail, answerphone, voicemail to email

The caller hears a greeting, leaves a message after the tone, and the recording is stored against the mailbox. Modern services transcribe the message and forward it as text, which makes it easier to triage but does not change what it is: a message waiting for a human to act.

Voicemail is the default destination for an unanswered call and the point at which most callers give up, many hang up rather than leave a message, and those who do have not been helped yet. Answering services and AI receptionists exist largely to replace the voicemail outcome with an answered call.
