Live answering
Live answering is a call being picked up and handled in real time, by a person or a conversational system. The alternative is voicemail, an automated menu or a recorded message.
Also called: live call answering, live operator answering, live receptionist
The term arose in the answering-service industry to distinguish a service where an operator actually answers from one where the caller is asked to leave a message. "Live" describes the caller’s experience, someone responds and a conversation happens, not the technology behind it.
Historically live answering meant a human operator, and many providers still use the phrase that way. With AI receptionists able to hold a real-time conversation, the phrase is now also used for automated answering that talks rather than plays a menu. When a buyer needs to know whether a human is involved, "live" on its own does not settle it.
The contrast that matters to callers is with voicemail and IVR: a large share of callers hang up without leaving a message, which is the problem live answering exists to solve.
