Warm transfer

A warm transfer is a call transfer in which the person handing off the call first speaks to the recipient, explains who is calling and why, and only then connects the caller.

Also called: attended transfer, announced transfer, consultative transfer

The caller is placed on hold; the receptionist rings the recipient, introduces the call ("I have Ms Ortega about the invoice from March"), and confirms they will take it. If the recipient is unavailable or declines, the receptionist comes back to the caller with an alternative rather than dropping them into voicemail.

The benefit is that the caller never repeats themselves and never lands with the wrong person. The cost is time: the caller waits while the introduction happens.

The opposite is a cold (blind) transfer, where the call is passed through with no introduction.
