Bilingual answering
Bilingual answering is call handling in which the receptionist or service can hold the conversation in two languages and switch to the caller’s language when needed. In the United States that is most often English and Spanish.
Also called: Spanish answering service, multilingual answering, bilingual receptionist
A bilingual service answers in one language, recognizes when the caller is more comfortable in another, and continues in that language: taking details, answering questions and booking appointments without transferring the caller elsewhere. Some services offer a wider set of languages and describe themselves as multilingual.
With human operators, bilingual cover depends on staffing, whether a speaker of the second language is on shift when the call arrives. With automated systems it depends on whether speech recognition, the language model and speech synthesis have all been set up for the second language, and on how well the system detects a language switch mid-call.
The category matters most in markets with a large share of callers whose first language is not English, such as home services and healthcare in many US regions, where an English-only front desk loses the inquiry at "hello".
